Why storage matters
Heat and moisture encourage mould, and some moulds produce mycotoxins such as aflatoxin that harm animals and can carry over into milk.
Storage rules
- Keep feed in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated place.
- Raise bags off the floor on pallets and away from walls.
- Use first-in, first-out and buy only what you will use in a few weeks.
- Keep grain at low moisture (about 13% or less).
- Protect the store from rodents and birds and inspect it regularly.
Signs of spoilage
A musty smell, clumps, discolouration or insects. Do not feed doubtful feed to animals; dispose of it safely.
